Radiotherapy (or radiation therapy or, more recently called, Radiation Oncology) is a medical specialty providing cancer patients radiation therapy. However, there are some non-malignant disorders that radiation oncology also plays a valuable role in successfully treating too.

Radiation oncology is most certainly dependent on high priced, complex technology equipment. But it has a working lifetime of ten years and the linear accelerators can treat thousands of patients during their life-time. The current Australian population is approximately 26 million. Radiation oncology treats approximately 90,000 cancer patients per year. Considering all modes of cancer treatment,  the megavoltage X-ray linear accelerator, used for the radiation therapy of cancer patients, is actually a  relatively cheap healthcare service. No other form of cancer treatment could economically treat that many cases annually.

The First Radiation Treatment

When the doctor first informs the patient that he/she has cancer, that’s a tremendous shock. Arriving for the first megavoltage radiation treatment is a difficult time to cope too.

The following travelogue and videos provide a brief description of the patient’s journey with staff assisting the patient during the steps through their treatment.

Radiation Therapy Videos

There are quite a few website video productions that describe the procedure for patients receiving external beam using megavoltage radiation therapy.

With permission of the video owners, betterhealthcaretechnology.org have chosen two Australian productions.
